Analysis by Open the Books — cited by RadarOnline — found the Defense Department spent about $93 billion in one September at the close of fiscal 2025. Reported purchases included millions on food (about $2M on Alaskan king crab, nearly $7M on lobster tails, $15M on ribeye), ice cream machines and doughnuts, as well as hundreds of millions on furniture, expensive recliners and tech devices. The reports also note purchases like a Steinway grand piano for Air Force Chief of Staff Kenneth S. Wilsbach.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer publicly blasted the spending, and Rep. Melanie Stansbury confirmed she is looking into the reported purchases, warning, “You better believe we’ll be investigating.” Hegseth has pressed Congress for as much as $1.5 trillion in military funding as he defends the budget choices.
