On June 30 the 77-year-old monarch accepted the city's keys from Lord Provost Robert Aldridge and immediately returned them for safekeeping, a tradition that formally opens Royal Week. He arrived by helicopter, met service chiefs, received a Royal Salute and inspected the Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland.
